Renovation and addition to an Historic Residence in Chicago, Illinois. The Horwitz residence is the rebuilding and addition of 1200 square feet to a "Dutch Frame" home in the Lakewood-Balmoral neighborhood of Chicago. The original home is conventional "balloon frame": 2x4 wood stud framing going the height of the building. The addition is a contrasting modernist aluminum skin, steel and glass exterior constructed in a "balloon" steel frame of 2x6 steel tubes going, again, the height of the building. However, after reconstructing the originals building with new heating, plumbing, cement siding, fluoropon-coated aluminum clad high efficiency windows, open riser steel and wood interior stair, and electrical systems; it can be argued that the original portion of the building is more high-tech than the addition.
